This glorious south pacific mask pendant comes from Papua New Guinea and shows exquisite shell detailing. The mask is from the Sepik in Papua New Guinea & measures at 52x17mm. These masks represented the spirits of the people and each mask was made uniquely for a different spirit. The masks were hand made by the people of Papua New Guinea out of mud and clay and the detailed were added to give each mask a different spirit. During ceremonies the people would don these masks so that the spirits could join them in the ceremony. Afterwards the people would hang the masks in their homes so that spirits would continue to look out for them. This pendant is a gorgeous reminder of these Papua New Guinean traditions.
