These sterling silver Sepik tribal mask earrings are crocodiles from Papua New Guinea and have a length of 55mm and width of 8mm. The Sepik masks were hand made from mud or tightly woven fibres and represented a spirit or the people. The crocodile was believed to have created the earth as its top jaw represented the sky and its bottom jaw was the land and sea. The tribal elders would attach these masks to their dance costumes during ceremonies so that they should become the spirit teacher. It was believed that the spirits that these masks represented would inhabit the people who wore them and enact their will through them.
