A lovely pair of sterling silver iolite and moonstone earrings. The moonstone is round and measures 10mm and the iolite is 7x5mm and oval in shape. Both gemstones have been bezel set and the silver has been rhodium plated for a premium finish.

Moonstone is a variety of feldspar, and the shimmer called schiller is caused by intergrowth of two different types of feldspar. Moonstone comes in a variety of colours, but the best moonstone has a blue sheen ,perfect clarity and colourless body colour. Moonstone has a hardness of 6 on the Mohs scale of hardness.

Iolite was first used by the Vikings for navigation. They used thin pieces of iolite as the worlds first polarizing filter. Looking through an iolite lens they could determine the exact position of the sun. This property called pleochroism, means different colours in different directions in the crystal. Iolite has a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale of hardness.
